An article by Sophia Money-Coutts on page 23 of today's (19/05/08) Evening Standard, an every day story of Clapham High Street.

"Hogarthian masses" at play, "hen parties traipsing about in cheerleading uniforms", "packs of men weaving along with beer cans", "sky rocketing muggings" etc.

Do I recognise my neighbourhood? Sadly I do.

Are muggings 'sky rocketing'?  I share her feelings on the rest for sure.

Its rather sad but that is the truth about Clapham on Friday and Saturday nights. The problem isn't Clapham natives/residents but night time visitors to the area from other parts of London and the country. In fact Clapham highstreet is a no-go area for most residents during both nights, so if you want some decent socialisation do it during the week Monday to Weds and avoid Thursday-Saturday. Its a pity that the facilities on the high street area has been designed sepcifically to attract young people in their twenties and early thirties particularly middle class sorts with no sense of how to act responsibly.

Daytime on the high street is great. The place is friendly and buzzing, the problem is primarily with the out of town yobs and yobettes who decend on clapham for a good time at night. Saturday and sunday morning are dreadful times when claphamites have to wade through tons of  beer bottles and beer cans and the kebab boxes that litter the roads, pavements, green spaces and fences. Lambeth Council have improved their waste clearing strategy but im not sure they can  keep up with the littering strategy of visitors to clapham and some claphamites, every clean up session by the council is immediately followed by more litter droppings, usually plastic bags, kebab boxes, crisps and sweet wraps. watch closely and the local people who litter the most are the so called uber trendy claphamites. There should be a keep clapham clean campaign and a call for more street bins or better still bring the litter police in and it will stop.
